FlowStop Stands Out in National Research Council of Canada Tests for Architecture sans frontières Québec Project

Écrit le |

On March 31, 2025, Architecture sans frontières Québec (ASFQ) unveiled its Living with Water project. Supported by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and bringing together over 120 partners (universities, municipalities, professional associations), this initiative aims to strengthen building resilience to flood risks—a major issue in Quebec and across Canada. Through this project, ASFQ offers an innovative toolbox combining practical guides, technical solutions, and protective devices designed to support citizens and professionals in preparing for water-related hazards.

A Rigorous Evaluation of Flood Protection Solutions

As part of the initiative, a comprehensive testing program was conducted in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). Two phases of testing were carried out:

  • Phase 1: Leak analysis on standard residential constructions.
  • Phase 2: Evaluation of several temporary barriers for flood-exposed openings, in a setting simulating waves and debris impacts.

Tested devices included traditional solutions (plywood, sandbags, metal stop logs) as well as more advanced technologies—among them, FlowStop.

FlowStop: Outstanding Confirmed Performance

The results are clear: FlowStop outperformed traditional methods.

  • Excellent Watertightness: No leaks, even under high hydraulic pressure.
  • High Durability: Effective resistance to waves and debris impacts.
  • Ease of Installation: Quick deployment with no major construction work required.
  • Versatility: Can be installed on various types of openings (doors, garages, windows).

FlowStop not only outperformed all other tested equipment, but also exceeded leading international standards (FM Approvals ANSI 2510), highlighting the need to adapt testing protocols to Canadian realities.

Toward a More Resilient Future

Thanks to this study, ASFQ is laying the groundwork for better selection of flood barriers in Canada. The findings also contribute to the development of new national standards to regulate temporary protection devices.

At FlowStop, we are proud to support this momentum by providing effective, reliable, and accessible solutions to help communities better live with water.
